Doula is a Greek word that means, "a woman who serves." I am a certified birth doula through DONA (dona.org-certification board), practicing for ten years in the Chicago land area. Through my own powerful and positive birthing experience in London, England was the catalyst to becoming a birth doula. Upon returning to the States on 9/11/2001 it was apparent that there was a gap in how moms in the US were given information, and how information was disseminated in the UK. It was due to this gap that I felt drawn to become a certified birth doula to support and educate women.
My goals are: advocacy for the mom and her wishes, and to support her partner and family members. (I have even gone on coffee runs for those waiting in the waiting rooms!)
Most importantly, I work in partnership with the medical team in the room.

"I cannot recommend Deb Torres enough as a doula. She supported me and my husband throughout my birth both emotionally and physically. There was a point in my birth process where I became emotionally blocked and felt afraid of asking for pain relief. Deb used her amazing empathetic skills to help me talk about my fears in the moment. As a result, I experienced an emotional release and felt empowered to ask for what I needed. Deb provided massage which significantly aided in relaxation. Deb's soothing composure greatly increased my ability to remain calm throughout my labor. She reminded me to breathe when she noticed I became tense."
"Additionally, Deb was so helpful in capturing the birth of our son on camera. I will have photographs that I will cherish forever because of her. I highly recommend Deb due to her warm and caring nature. She is incredibly knowledgeable about the birth process. Her compassionate and soothing nature allowed me to feel in charge and empowered throughout my birthing process. My husband and I am so grateful for Deb!"
"This is a letter of recommendation for Deb Torres. Deb served as our doula during out birth of our son on December 31, 2012 at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Illinois. We found Deb to be very helpful. She has a naturally warm personality and exhibits a high degree of empathy. This was our first child. Labor and delivery went very smoothly without any complications. Deb's experience and coaching certainly helped to ease my anxiety and pain. We are very grateful. Our son is doing very well."

"At the baby's birth, Deb not only supported the patient and her husband, but connected with Labor and delivery staff, collaborating amazingly with nurses and the patient's doctor. This teamwork enhanced the support surrounding the patient, and I do believe it was instrumental in her being able to manage labor and to have the vaginal birth she hoped for."
"I can't say enough about the impact that Deb has on this woman's birth experience. She provided her services free of charge, but her value was priceless. Her compassion, empathy, sincerity, knowledge, and insight make her an amazing resource, and I would recommend Deb without hesitation to any mother-to-be who is looking for a doula."
